DESCRIPTION:Ahi Na Ma!\nAll our publicity since the beginning of El Swing has featured images of the great Celia Cruz\, the undisputed Queen of Salsa\, aka La Reina.\nÚrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (21 October 1925 – 16 July 2003) would have been 99 in October and we will be celebrating her life and music. La Reina recorded 70+ solo albums as well as collaborative releases with other major Salsa artists such as Willie Colón\, Ray Barretto\, Tito Puente\, Johnny Pacheco and La Sonora Ponceña; and was the brightest star amongst the Fania All-Stars with any number of Salsa and Tropical classics to her name.\nReina Rumba “The queens of the party!” – October’s live band – will be making a long overdue return to The Portico and El Swing. Reina Rumba are a 4 piece all female outfit consisting of bass\, piano\, multi percussion and vocals. Reina Rumba perform a range of Latin musical styles; salsa\, son\, cumbia\, bachata and bolero to name a few.\nThe name of the band was taken from Celia Cruz’s song “Reina Rumba” which talks about the female spirit at the core of this afro-tropical rhythm: rumba. Reina Rumba aims to bring this energetic female spirit to its music and performance.\nLa Reina lives on! ¡Azúcar!\nWe begin the evening with a salsa dance class led by the wonderful Yamile and DJ sets from your resident selectors spinning the hottest new salsa dura to the deepest\, classic Fania and all the amazing stuff in between.\n📚 7:30pm Cross-body salsa class \n🪇 8:30pm Social with Djs \n🪇 10pm Reina Rumba \n🪇 11pm Social with DJs \n😴 Midnight Close \n💰 £12

DESCRIPTION:Ahi Na Ma \nEl Swing in November features live music from Rey Crespo & Cuban Ensemble. \nRey was born in Havana to a mother who herself was a famous singer\, and spent 9 years at Cuba’s premiere music academies\, studying composition\, arrangement\, guitar and bass. His emergence as a professional musician – bass virtuoso and bandleader – came via recording and performing with great Cuban artists such as Elena Burke and sonero mayor Raul Planas as well as Omara Portuondo\, Orlando ‘Cachaito’ Lopez\, and the legendary pianist Ruben Gonzalez – all founder members of the phenomenally\, and globally\, successful Buena Vista Social Club. \nRey Crespo has been the musical director of several bands in the UK such as Balangandan\, Sabroso All Stars\, Son Yambu\, Cuban Ensemble\, Ska Cubano and others. Rey was also a music producer for the Cuban music company EGREM and has produced several projects in France\, Cuba and the UK. \nRey will be leading his 7-piece band through a set of pure Salsa with a little Cuban Timba on the side. \n\n📚 7:30pm Cross-body salsa class \n🪇 8:30pm Social with Djs \n🪇 10pm Rey Crespo & Cuban Ensemble \n🪇 11pm Social with DJs \n😴 Midnight Close \n💰 £12
